The pandemic has changed everything, include Bike to Work Day. Now that so many folks are staying at home to work, the Bike to Work Day has been rechristened  ‘Bike to Wherever’ Day and the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition (SCBC) is putting the emphasis of this popular yearly event on National Bike Month.

May is National Bike Month, created by the League of American Cyclists in 1956 to promote the benefits of bicycling and encourage more folks to give it a try.

In preparation for local festivities, the SCBC has opened nominations for two awards: Bicycle Champion of the Year and Bike-Friendly Business of the Year.

  • Each year, SCBC honors an individual whose commitment to bicycle riding serves as an inspiration to others, someone who is truly committed to riding their bike for everyday transportation, a cyclist who encourages others to get out and pedal maybe for the first time or to start again.
  • Our Bike-Friendly Business of the Year award is designed to educate employers on ways they can encourage bicycle commuting.

Nomination forms are available online at bikesonoma.org/BTWD and the deadline is April 1st.

Other Bike to Wherever events include a virtual pre-Bike to Wherever Day bike clinic; Safe Cycling classes; and Bike to Wherever Day Energizer Stations on Friday, May 21. For more information, visit bikesonoma.org/btwd or contact Cherie Barnett at 707-545-0153 or cherie@bikesonoma.org.
