Summer Session: Introduction to Ceramics (for Teens)

8 week session (with the one-week break work can be fired and ready to glaze)

Ages 13-17
Max: 7 students

We are asking that students over the age of 12 provide proof of vaccination upon arrival of their first class. Any students unable to be vaccinated due to medical conditions or religious beliefs will need to provide proof of a negative Covid test prior to each class.

Everyone is required to wear masks indoors. We will have K-N95 masks available.

In this introductory class, you will learn how to throw cylinders, cups, and bowls on the potter’s wheel; in addition, you will learn the most ancient pottery-making techniques of slab construction and coil building. Handles, surface decoration, and glaze application are also demonstrated.

Instructor: Nahline Gouin

Nahline Gouin is a ceramic artist living in Sebastopol, where she continues with her studio practice and homeschools her son. Nahline is fluent in Spanish as she is half Mexican, and lived in Mexico until age seven. She has a BFA in Sculpture from the Academy of Art University and finished her graduate work in Museum Studies, Collections & Education from John F. Kennedy University. She has taught ceramics to all ages, all over the Bay Area, including at the original Kids “N’ Clay in Berkeley, the San Francisco Lighthouse for the Blind, the Randall Museum, and the JCCSF. She has gained valuable teaching experience at all of these places and she’s excited to teach at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts.

En esta clase introductoria, aprenderá a arrojar cilindros, tazas y tazones en el torno del alfarero; Además, aprenderá las técnicas de fabricación de cerámica más antiguas de la construcción de losas y la construcción de bobinas. También se muestran los mangos, la decoración de superficies y la aplicación de esmalte.

Intructora: Nahline Goiun. Nahline Gouin es una artista de cerámica que vive en Sebastopol, donde continúa con su práctica de estudio y educa a su hijo en casa. Nahline habla español con fluidez ya que es mitad mexicana y vivió en México hasta los siete años. Tiene un BFA en Escultura de la Academy of Art University y terminó su trabajo de posgrado en Estudios de Museos, Colecciones y Educación de la Universidad John F. Kennedy. Ha enseñado cerámica a todas las edades, en todo el Área de la Bahía, incluso en el Kids “N’ Clay original en Berkeley, el Faro de San Francisco para Ciegos, el Museo Randall y el JCCSF. Ha adquirido una valiosa experiencia docente en todos estos lugares y está emocionada de enseñar en el Centro de las Artes de Sebastopol.
