We see the emerging artist, initially in Leiden and from 1632 Amsterdam. We discuss his youthful period, and early works under the influence of Lastman and then a 180 degree turnaround in his art when the Caravaggio influence takes over – in his self portrait c 1628, and Jeremiah, 1630 up to the Night Watch 1642.
His regular family life breaks down in 1642 when his wife Saskia dies.
