Hopmonk Sebastopol Presents: Crying Time
Sep 18, 2021 11:30 am
CRYING TIME: Honky-tonk revisionists out of Oakland, Crying Time plays straight-up honky-tonk and country music, from Bob Wills to Glen Campbell, with their original songs sitting pretty in the mix – you’ll think you heard these tunes on your daddy’s stereo when you were little. Jill Rogers is a singer’s singer with a 1974 voice and a story to tell, and Myles Boisen is a hero of juke joint licks on the six string and lap steel guitar. Bay Area music scene veteran Tony Marcus’s fiddle weaves through the songs while Tim Rowe on drums and Russell Keil on bass hold down the rhythm with grace, style, and swing.
Jill Rogers delivers convincing, full-throated, but not faux-hillbilly, lead vocals…Add guest virtuoso Bobby Black on pedal steel and you have another great spin on the no-nonsense country of Bakersfield and pre-pop Nashville —in a tradition that includes Jimmie Rivers, Asleep at the Wheel, and others. Crying Time begs for a dance floor to accommodate your happy feet and a beer to catch your tears. – Derk Richardson (Oakland Magazine/ KPFA)
KALX radio says, “Country singing from Oakland standouts. Real musicians, not just stompers. Jill Rogers is an amazing singer. Just plain beautiful.”
